For ages I resisted meditation. I didn’t think I could be quiet and manage to keep intrusive thoughts out of my mind for any length of time. To begin with, I couldn’t. Planning for the next day or remembering household tasks that needed doing always popped into my head when I was meant to be concentrating on my breathing. But practice definitely works.
Soon I was breathing deeply, acknowledging my thoughts but not dwelling on them and spending a little time at peace. My secret is to write a Brain Dump list before I start!
I’ve found that apps have helped. Smiling Mind and Calm are both good and I’d recommend them both.
It’s definitely helped to improve my sleep as I find it difficult to relax at bedtime on the days where I don’t fit in a meditation session.
For those of you who’ve been inspired to avoid meditate, either today or in the past, how did it go? How do you feel now that you’ve done it? Did it improve the quality of your sleep? Do you have a favourite app? Add your comments below.
Come back tomorrow for your next nudge into peaceful sleep.
