After years of playing steel pans I suffer from carpel tunnel syndrome which is so frustrating because it really slows me down. My wrists are always worse when I’ve been typing a lot which is a bit of an occupational hazard for me. In our school office there are gel filled wrist supports in front of the keyboards but they are too wide to fit in front of my laptop in the classroom… so, after a bit of fruitless searching on the internet, my husband suggested I knit one. He’s full of good ideas!
I used up a bit of wool from my stash to make this – it hardly takes any to make it. I used a moss green DK that I had leftover from making my nephew a soft toy. I then used a bit of pink DK from my stash to make the pattern. I added the pattern so it looked a bit more interesting, otherwise it was going to end up looking like a green slug!
Cast on 80 stitches in green.
rows 1-24: Stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row)
row 25: [K3 green, K5 pink] repeat until you reach the end of the row.
row 26: [P1 pink, P3 green] repeat until you reach the end of the row.
row 27: [K3 green, K1 pink, K1 green, K1 pink, K1 green, K1 pink] repeat until you get to the end of the row.
row 28: [P1 pink, P3 green] repeat to the end of the row.
row 29: [K3 green, K5 pink]
rows 30-50: Stocking stitch (purl one row, knit one row).
Cast off.
Pin the long edges together and sew together using mattress stitch. Flatten the tube so that your design is on the top and pin one short end together and sew together using mattress stitch. Fill the tube with wadding, be generous so it becomes quite firm, and then sew up the remaining end. Place in front of your laptop and be more comfortable. I’ve laid it on a small piece of anti-slip matting so it doesn’t slide around as I type, I think I’ll sew this to the back so I don’t lose it when I take it home to do work.
brilliant idea Claire! Will need to make soon 🙂

Thanks, it’s certainly made a difference, I notice when I’m not using it.

At the moment I don’t take orders I’m afraid -too much going on in my little life. I’m looking at setting up a Folksy store. For interest, what would you pay for an item like this?

I can’t knit anymore, too much pain. I still use my wrist support at work, I’d forgotten how long it was since I made it!
