October Sleep 18: Bedtime Routine

It’s so easy to turn of the TV and fall into bed. Your body’s exhausted but your mind is just not ready to give in and fall asleep. We can’t expect our bodies to go from concentrating on a tv programme with visual, auditory and perhaps emotional stimulation to relaxing into slumber within moments.

To help prepare your body, both mentally and physically, a bedtime routine is useful. Think about the things that have already helped to improve the quality of your sleep this month. Perhaps a bath followed by a warm drink or maybe a spot of yoga followed by a spray of lavender around the room.

Whatever you choose, make it into a routine that you follow every day. Your body will learn that it’s time to wind down towards sleep.

For those of you who’ve been inspired to create a bedtime routine, either today or in the past, how did it go? How do you feel now that you’ve done it? Did it improve the quality of your sleep? Add your comments below.

Come back tomorrow for your next nudge into peaceful sleep.
